Pumpkins have spread worldwide to become the ultimate symbol of Halloween. Originally, people in Ireland and Scotland carved scary faces into turnips to create “jack-o’-lanterns” that would ward off evil spirits. When immigrants came to America, they discovered pumpkins that were bigger, brighter, and much easier to carve. Because of when pumpkins are harvested, they quickly became the perfect fit for Halloween displays. Today, carved pumpkin jack-o’-lanterns light up porches everywhere, bringing together the spooky and festive spirit of Halloween. We created the Singing Pumpkin Stack to take all the hard work out of carving a pumpkin. Make your Halloween Display dazzle your audience.
Here’s the breakdown:
-
Harvest Symbol
Pumpkins are native to North America and ripen in autumn, making them the perfect symbol of the fall harvest. Their abundance in October naturally tied them to seasonal festivals. -
Jack-o’-Lantern Tradition
The practice of carving faces into vegetables came from Ireland and Scotland. People carved turnips, beets, or potatoes into lanterns to ward off evil spirits, inspired by the legend of “Stingy Jack,” a trickster doomed to roam the earth. When immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins—larger, softer, and easier to carve—so the pumpkin became the new jack-o’-lantern. Rather than carve a pumpkin, our Singing Pumpkin Stack is ready to use, year after year. -
Scary (and Fun) Decoration
Carved pumpkins with glowing candles inside became spooky nighttime displays, perfect for Halloween’s theme of blending the eerie with the playful. -
Cultural Icon
Over time, pumpkins became inseparable from Halloween marketing, movies, and folklore. Today, they’re both decorative (porch displays, pumpkin patches) and symbolic (representing autumn and Halloween itself).
👉 In short: pumpkins are used in Halloween displays because they’re seasonal, practical for carving, and rooted in folklore that merged with Halloween traditions.
